St. Rose could best be described as a Mother Teresa for the 16th Century. Much like Teresa of Calcutta, Rose of Lima was devout in her prayer and generous in love and charity. Upon her death, she was recognized as a saint by popular acclamation, but was later officially recognized by the Church for her outstanding holiness and given the title, “Patroness of Peru, the Americas, and the Philippine Islands”. The Feast of Saint Rose of Lima falls on August 24 but is celebrated in Lima on the 30th of August. Here, in Chula Vista, we like to celebrate her feast between the two dates as we recognize her life of charity. Saint Rose of Lima is known as the Patroness of the Americas and the Philippine Islands. This title was given to her when the American and Filipino people lived under the same Spanish flag. The Spanish Dominican priests and sisters were missionaries at the time and had established churches and major universities in America and the Philippines. Because she was a Dominican herself, St. Rose was honored as a saint by the Dominican community and by the Church. Her statue is found at the Cathedral in Manila. Flags of all of the countries in the Americas and the Philippines are on display at the stage area and are also carried in procession during the Feast Day Mass held at 5:00 pm on Saturday, August 29. In honor of St. Rose of Lima, the Chula Vista Rose Festival focuses on three aspects of her spirituality: Charity, Prayer, and the Celebration of Life! A Written Tradition: A 3 year bible study program. Please join Father John Dolan as we continue a three year Bible Study excursion. A list of our next classes are found here. They are held at 7 pm in the church unless otherwise noted. Classes will resume in September. What is Stewardship: Stewardship is a complete lifestyle, a life of total accountability and responsibility acknowledging God as Creator and Owner of all. Stewardship is responsible management of our God-given resources of time, talent, and treasure. It enhances our relationships with God and one another. Stewardship is living out a commitment to be Christ-centered rather than self-centered and involves a conversion of the heart. Stewardship is a lifelong journey with each person at a different place on the path. Homilies: Read about Sunday homilies from our priest and deacons. Stay Tuned to our 2010 Rose Festival
